Hallo zusammen / Hi everyone,
I am a UK expat living in NW and I’m finally planning to bring my beloved 1975 T2 Bay Window to Switzerland. I’ve owned this bus over the last 20 years—it’s been our wedding car and my wife and I would love to use it in Switzerland for trips, meetups and holidays.
I bought the vehicle in Australia and imported it to the UK with a 1600cc engine in. However I think it would have originally had a 1800 engine from the factory when originally manufactured.
I am reaching out because I’m hitting a bit of a “technical wall” regarding the engine and the MFK requirements. Most is a stock setup except for the engine.
The Setup:
-
Year: 1975 (Post-1973 emissions cutoff).
-
Engine: 1776cc (rebuilt, very clean).
-
Current Induction: Twin carbs (which I know is a “No-Go” for a 1975 MFK without expensive certificates).
Possible Plan: To simplify the import, I am open to revert the engine to a single 34 PICT-3 carb and a stock air box before it leaves the UK. I would prefer not to do this if it is avoidable.
My Questions for the Experts here:
-
Has anyone successfully taken a 1776cc through the MFK in Stans? Are they likely to look for displacement markings, or will they accept it as a “standard” 1600cc if it looks visually stock?
-
Does anyone have experience with the 31.12.1973 Abgas (emissions) rule in Nidwalden? If the CO levels are correct for a 1975 model, will they dig deeper into the engine specs?
-
Can anyone recommend a “classic-friendly” garage in the Obwalden/Nidwalden area who could help with the final MFK prep? (I’ve heard of Röthlin in Kerns and Fabian at Zündpunkt).
I’m really looking forward to getting this bus on Swiss plates and meeting some of you at the Zweisimmen meeting in August!
